With all that’s going on around and inside of us right now, I recalled some words I penned recently that I was hoping might provide a breath of fresh air (there’s a good pun in there somewhere as you’ll likely find as you read on). Here goes …
As I sit here listening to Focus on the Family on this sunny day, I took notice that our glass top outdoor table is covered with pollen. The annual pollen season has begun in full force in our neck of the woods, and there’s a familiar yellow substance covering everything that doesn’t move. It seems quite subject to the blowing wind today. Today’s pollen reminds me of the current atmosphere in the world we live in at this moment. Martin Luther said that “God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” I see the pollen as the anxiety and fear that seems so noticeable in this current world we live in. It’s being blown around by the winds of uncertainty. The lack of certain basic necessities has caused some to fear running out of those things that we need each day.
God’s Word tells us we need not fear this day or those to come. I believe Proverbs twenty-nine verse five says it best:
The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
As Christ-followers, we are safe as we trust the God of the universe to calm the winds of fear and uncertainty. We must use our God-given common sense but, even more, continue to trust in the One who can be trusted every moment of every day.
Just as the blanket of pollen covers everything around us, so we as Christ-followers need to cover our communities with the love of Christ and be an example to our neighbors of the love that was extended to us.
